Help us serve the neediest people on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation--the homeless and those with insufficient food.
We are committed to serving "those who fall between the cracks" or those not eligible for other shelters or services, and to letting people in, not keeping them out. To do this, we must overcome trust barriers, and be welcoming and non-bureaucratic.
Government funding requires extensive applications with financial and personal disclosure, and an absolute ban on alcohol. We require only that residents lack a safe place to sleep, be willing to respect others, help with chores, and follow a few basic rules.
One government funder told us, "You are doing exactly what our mission says, but our rules haven't caught up."
Local resources are limited, too, with about 30% of reservation households having incomes below the federal poverty level.
Almost from the beginning, in-kind donations of goods have provided most of our income. We get food from Feeding South Dakota at extremely low cost, supplemented by area businesses and individuals.
Youthworks of Minneapolis brought volunteers to build our facilities, Bethlehem Lutheran on the Midway of St. Paul, MN donated materials and labor for two small buildings, and numerous other contributions. The Cheyenne River Housing Authority donated steel siding and underground electrical service. Others have sent blankets, adult winter clothing and other goods. If we can't use it, we find someone who can.
Some give cash--crucial for electricity, propane, water, insurance, and household supplies, and occasionally building materials. WE WELCOME NEW AND RETURNING GROUPS.
