Help us serve the neediest people on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation--the homeless and those with insufficient food.

We are committed to serving "those who fall between the cracks," or those not eligible for other shelters or services. We strive to let people in, not keep them out. To do this, we must overcome trust barriers, and be welcoming and non-bureaucratic.
Government funding requires extensive applications with financial and personal disclosure, and an absolute ban on alcohol. We require only that residents lack a safe place to sleep, be willing to respect others, help with chores, and follow a few basic rules.
One government funder told us, "You are doing exactly what our mission says, but our rules haven't caught up."
Local resources are limited, too, with about 30% of reservation households having incomes below the federal poverty level.
Almost from the beginning, in-kind donations of goods have provided most of our income. Our food comes from Feeding South Dakota at extremely low cost, supplemented by area businesses and individuals.
Our construction and maintenance has been done by volunteers. First, Youthworks of Minneapolis, then Next Step Ministries of Madison, WI, have brought a steady stream of church groups across the nation each summer. Several churches have major contributions of labor, materials, other goods and cash. The tribal housing authority donated building materials and labor. An area bank has subsidized our winter heating costs. Others have sent blankets, adult winter clothing and other goods. If we can't use it, we find someone who can.
Some give cash--crucial for electricity, propane, water, insurance, and household supplies. WE WELCOME NEW AND RETURNING GROUPS.
